If “art is dead” then you could also draw the conclusion that art was killed by the art critic. It is not necessarily art that matters, it is what you write about art that makes art art. Good artists are also good con-artists since popularity is nothing more but the product of good hype. It is unfortunate that all to often the brilliance and quality of an artist’s work matters little in contrast to what is said about their work. It is also unfortunate that most great artists where ridiculed by their peers, only to die unaware of the impact they would later leave, and be honored by the same type of individuals or institutions that had shunned them. Art is not dead. Popularized art is dead.
